Germany Day 03

Pop wrote a "we're over here looking for relatives" note, which I had translated to German. Choose a couple of Bassler / Mussbach addresses from the phone book, and we were off. Arrived at the first address, which turned out to be the parents of the name we had chosen. Helmut & Gertrud were gracious, and while spoken zero English, invited us in for a drink and chat. Helmut then contacted the village genealogist, Fritz, and after gifting us with a bottle of his own wine (a retired wine grower), we followed him on his bicycle.

Fritz und Helga's house was just as immaculate, and his handwritten records were vast - took up one room of his house. The 'Bassler' binder alone was significant, and fortunate for us, we were able to find Fredrich's grandfather, bringing us a total of 8 generations back from Ryan. Helmut made a call, and we're now invited to lunch tomorrow from another Bassler descendent in town. USA! USA! etc. Couldn't help keep thinking of the "mistaken relatives" scene from National Lampoon's European Vacation, though.











We drove Fritz to a copy shop for copies, then headed across the street to a shop to find any Mussbach-related wares.




Plugged Hambach Castle into the GPS, and drove up into the hills. They were about to close, but the views were quite nice.





Back for another great German meal (at where the German cook spoke English, due to living in Texas and Kentucky at times).
